The initial two letters of Dwayne Johnson’s three daughters’ names, “TIJASI,” are engraved on the bottom of each bottle of Teremana tequila.

Delicious? Of course. However, Johnson, a former wrestler who is now a multi-hyphenate box office titan, hopes it serves as a reminder as well.

I make an effort to convey to the girls that, first and foremost, the world is yours. Additionally, it exists for young girls—especially young girls of color—he told reporters on Thursday. “You will face challenges, but if Teremana exemplifies perseverance and produces something that people appreciate, then follow her lead.”

Over a glass of Teremana Blanco (poured over ice, with an orange slice, in case you’re curious), Johnson discussed this tribute to Tiana, 5, Jasmine, 7, and Simone, 22, at Mana Holiday House, a limited-engagement brand-focused experience being held in Los Angeles this weekend, in New York City on December 12 and 13, and online.

In a casual conversation, Johnson talked about his family, the lessons he learned from starting a company amid a pandemic, and joked about his favorite drinking games over the holidays.

Three years ago, at the onset of the coronavirus, Teremana was released. Looking back on the experience, Johnson said it was difficult to introduce a new brand at a time when consumers were looking for security and familiarity. As a result, they had to abandon their original rollout plans in favor of something more personal.

They decided not to use their marketing budget and instead started Teremana Tuesdays on Johnson’s Instagram account, where he would interact with followers and pour himself a drink.

Johnson claimed that by taking this approach, he was able to “really get to know people” and “them to know me.”

“It did make it possible for me to interact with others and the community in ways that I hadn’t before. Then it dawned on me, “Well, let’s just apply this to everything else going forward.”

Johnson claimed to be a follower of “the best thing that never happened,” a hard-learned lesson borne out of disappointments over many years. However, he declared, “I believe in having faith and I believe in trusting my gut.”

“Whatever transpires will be the necessary event at that particular moment,” he declared.

Teremana appears to have made a wise early marketing pivot.

In a press release, the brand stated that sales had crossed one million cases per year.

“I’ve stated this previously…The most powerful and easiest thing we could be is ourselves, according to Johnson. It took me years to do it.I began saying it, but it wasn’t until I began to live it that I understood its true power.

Johnson said that he intends to carry on his family’s holiday custom of spending time together, complete with a visit from Santa once his kids go to bed at approximately 11 p.m. after trying “their hardest to stay up as long as they can.”

When they go to bed, however, the drinking games begin. But which one was his favorite?

“They wound up making my babies so…” he said, laughing, “It’s the best.”
