Historic Vigil Outside White House Calling for Ceasefire

On 13 December 2023, Washington- Staff members of the Biden administration and political appointees gathered in front of the White House on Wednesday to demand President Joe Biden back an ongoing truce in Gaza.

Approximately thirty-six individuals, including career civil service employees, administration workers, and political appointees, participated in the dawn vigil in front of the White House. The players disguised their identities by donning masks and sunglasses.

The inaugural address was given by Josh Paul, a former employee of the State Department who quit in October due to disagreements with the Biden administration’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. A declaration sent to him by a group of Palestinian administration staffers who want to remain anonymous was also read by a former employee of the administration.

The former administration official stated, “Our objectives… around the globe have been put in jeopardy for us to achieve any movement on some of the most intractable issues we face today by the US government’s decision to double down on fueling the violence.”

The vigil’s organizing committee deemed the violence that has been occurring in Gaza over the past few weeks to be “unacceptable.”

“We have been shocked to witness the complete return of deaths, displacement, and shelling of Palestinian civilians in Gaza since the interim ceasefire collapsed 13 days ago. It was never enough to put an end to this brutality temporarily. Paul gave prepared statements at the vigil on behalf of the organization that stated, “We must move with urgency to save as many lives as possible and achieve an immediate, permanent ceasefire agreement and the return of all hostages.”.

Additionally, he stated: “This administration has not yet listened to the pleas for a ceasefire made by the American people and reputable organizations like the UN. We want President Biden and Cabinet officials to take a stand and demand an urgent de-escalation, a permanent ceasefire, and the release of all captives.

This vigil is being held at a time when staff members in the Biden administration are becoming more and more furious with the president’s response to the attack by Hamas on October 7.

In a statement signed last month, almost 700 political appointees and staff members urged the president to back a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Employees from over 30 departments and organizations, including the FBI, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency, signed the letter.

“We urge President Biden to demand a ceasefire insistently and to advocate for the de-escalation of the ongoing conflict by guaranteeing the prompt liberation of Israeli hostages and Palestinians detained arbitrarily; the reinstatement of water, fuel, electricity, and other essential services; and the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip,” the letter read.
