Airtel Africa Appoints Sunil Taldar As New CEO

Airtel Africa announced on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, that Sunil Taldar will take over as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Working with Ogunsanya, Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as Director-Transformation, will start the shift to the CEO position. The company released a statement stating that Taldar will take on the post of CEO and be nominated to the Board as an Executive Director after a transition period.
Olusegun Ounynsanya, a Nigerian who held the role for an extraordinary twelve years, is succeeded by Taldar.
Before being named Chief Executive Officer of the Group in 2021, Ogunsanya joined Airtel in 2012 and oversaw the company’s Nigerian operations for nine years.
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa, supported the appointment of Sunil Taldar, citing Taldar’s extensive experience and strategic vision.
Mittal said that the selection of Sunil Taldar as the group’s future chief executive officer makes the board very happy. He added that Sunil will be able to lead the group in the next phases of its development due to his industry experience, strategic vision, unwavering focus on the needs of the customer, and demonstrated track record of delivery.

Ounynsanya was recognized for his noteworthy accomplishments throughout his tenure, which included the company’s first sustainability strategy’s successful implementation, and he officially retired on January 1, 2024.
“Working at Airtel Africa for more than 12 years has been an honor, and I’m proud of the services we have provided to clients all over Africa.” We keep changing lives,” Ounynsanya remarked.
Ounynsanya’s influence was acknowledged by Airtel Africa PLC, which named him the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation’s chairperson.
In this new position, he will use his inspiring leadership to spearhead charitable projects that promote wealth and development throughout Africa.
The moment has come for me to pass the reins to a new leader who can expand on Airtel Africa’s strengths and seize the important opportunities that lie ahead, according to Ounynsanya.
He also expressed his newfound desire to work outside the walls of for-profit businesses to support Africans’ financial and digital inclusion and empowerment.

Ounynsanya will advise the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board, and the next CEO for a year as part of the transition strategy.
Thanking Ounynsanya for taking on these new responsibilities, Mittal expressed his belief that Ounynsanya’s inspirational leadership had contributed to the development of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation.
“I am happy that Segun has decided to take on the role of Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation after his retirement. He will apply his inspiring leadership to this new charitable endeavor to promote prosperity and development throughout Africa,” Mittal stated.
