On Monday, November 22, 2021, KENS 5 made the announcement that the seasoned anchor will only be present for the 5 p.m. show instead of the 10 p.m. one. The announcement follows recent changes at the station, which saw Stacia Willson and Erica Zucco leave and Alanna Sarabia, Sarah Duran, and Ryan Shoptaugh join. Audrey Castoreno, the morning anchor, has also shifted times; she will now anchor the 4 p.m.
In 1987, Knapp began working for the local CBS affiliate news station. She decided to reduce her workload in order to focus on her charity work and spend more time with her family and friends.
“I made the decision that it was time for me to work a little less and hang out with my spouse and friends in the evenings.”
According to Knapp in the press release,
“KENS 5 management has been wonderful in accepting this request to remain anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast but no longer anchor at 10 p.m.”
“This will also free up more time for me to volunteer at the Old Spanish Missions, the Alamo Colleges Foundation, and other amazing organizations in our city.”
The station had not revealed the person taking Knapp’s place at the 10 p.m. desk. General Manager Tom Cury, though, was pleased that Knapp’s request for a reduction in her workload was granted by the station.
Deborah had been welcomed by San Antonio for the past 35 years due to her dedication to the community and her excellent journalism. The president and general manager, Tom Cury, remarked,
“She’s just the greatest news anchor out there. Deborah’s decision to remain with the station to continue anchoring our 5 p.m. program, interact with the community, and coach aspiring journalists in our newsroom makes us happy.”
