Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen proposed the installation of new toll stations on major highways to generate revenue for the nation’s road building and maintenance projects.
During the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan unveiling on Friday, CS Murkomen, the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA), stated that Athi River–Namanga Road and Galleria–Rongai–Ngong–Karen Shopping Center were included in the list.
Additional routes were Kiambu Road, Corridors C and D, which lead to Museum Hill-Moyale and Sirare-Lodwar, respectively, and Mombasa to Malaba.
The CS emphasized the government’s resolve to secure other funding sources to support the nation’s road network upgrades.
He continued by saying that the idea would strengthen the nation’s overall plan to build more than 2,000 kilometers.
“We will ensure that the resources from all those tolled roads are returned to the Kenyan people through the construction of high-quality roads,” said Murkomen.
He calculated that the installation of the new toll booths along the main roads would cost the government, on average, Ksh700 million.
He continued by saying that to implement the KeNHA strategic plan within the next four years, the government is looking to use the Public Private Partnership in addition to monies from Climate Funding.
The main responsibility of KeNHA is to build, renovate, oversee, and maintain all of the nation’s national trunk roads.
