Governor Nassir Takes Aim at DP Gachagua Over War On Drugs

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come under fire from Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir over the security authorities’ inability to apprehend drug lords operating within the county.

Speaking on Saturday, March 2, Governor Nassir questioned why, despite Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome’s ultimatum to the Mombasa County Commissioner to make arrests, the government had not yet detained any drug barons in the county.

Gov. Nassir pointed out at the DP saying that he need to acknowledge that they have failed in this crisis as the government. Despite having security forces, ambassadors, local elders, and other ways to obtain information, the government is not succeding in capturing the drug lords.

The head of Mombasa County urged the government to apprehend drug lords and display them in public so that Kenyans may get to know them.

“Until when will you keep deceiving the people of Mombasa?” Governor Nassir continued. How long will you continue this downward trajectory of daily broken promises? We are commanding you to act immediately, seize them, and reveal to the people of Mombasa that they are drug dealers. Give up deceiving the public.

His comments follow DP Gachagua’s Coast Region Alcohol and Drug Misuse Conference, which was held in Mombasa County a few days ago, to talk about the fight against alcohol and drug misuse in the area.

Gachagua criticized legislators in the coast region for their silence on the problems related to drugs and alcohol abuse during the conference.

Gachagua said, “Considering that drug use is a major issue affecting the people they govern, why are most Coast leaders silent on the subject? Is it possible that they fear drug lords? These are elected officials; why are they silent? Is it possible that some of these drug lords helped them win the election?

The DP also questioned why a few prominent figures had not attended the meeting, which was meant to address the problem of drug and alcohol abuse in the area.
